The benefits of exercise for seniors

It is a well-documented fact that exercise is one of the key pillars to good health and wellness, and here at Karingal Green we are proud to have a broad range of wellness services available to our residents and customers.

Where possible, we encourage regular physical activity and support this with a range of exercise classes at our Wellness Centre which has been purpose built for the older person, with innovative programs and equipment to assist with health and healing.

Here are our top 5 benefits for regular physical activity for seniors….

Prevent disease
Research concludes that many common diseases such as diabetes and heart disease can be prevented with regular exercise in addition to supporting a healthy immune system which have a tendency to weaken as we age. Even regular light exercise such as swimming or walking can be effective for preventable disease management.

Improved mental health
Exercise is wonderful for strong mental health! Our bodies are flooded with endorphins which make us feel happy, relieve stress and improve sleep patterns which is important for older adults who sometimes suffer from insomnia and disrupted sleep patterns.

Decrease risk of falls and injury
Keeping regularly active helps to improve bone density, core strength and flexibility in older adults which is important for reducing the risk of falls and injury.

Improved cognitive function
Fine-tune motor skills benefit greatly from regular exercise with many studies crediting lower risks of dementia in patients who incorporate exercise regularly into their routines.

Social engagement
The social aspect of exercise, including walking groups and group exercise classes offer so many emotional and mental benefits to people of all ages. It is particularly important for those in their senior years as it allows them to engage in the community
